MACEO PARKER - GOT TO GET U
Billboard charts and Grammy awards are cool, but there’s an even more exclusive achievement for a song: the hall of fame populated by those that became your ringtone.
I don’t know about you, but in my case, (omitting some excellent and anonymous factory installed tones), only three songs have received that recognition in history. The first one was Victor Wooten’s incredible hook on “What You Won’t Do For Love” (specifically at 3:51), which I took the time to carefully cut to have it in a separate audio file for that purpose. My current tone is from Bobby McFerrin, but I’ll talk about this one in a separate entry. I want to tell you about the one I had in between those two, Maceo Parker’s “Got To Get U” (inexplicably misspelled “Go To Get U” in Spotify grrrr).
There are and have been many talented players, but Maceo is one of the minority whose signature style is easily recognizable even without being an expert on that instrument. And the album’s groove… as the title says, is really from another planet. It was recorded on planet Earth though, in 1992 at the Stadtgarten in Cologne (Germany) and it occupies one of the top positions on my list of concerts I wish I could have attended. I was only 6 years old at that time, so it’s not one of those shows you skip and torment yourself for the rest of your life, but I assure you it would be one of my first stops if time machines get invented someday.
Still, the album is an excellent testimony, it intensively encapsulates the air of the room. You can not only breathe it, you can even smell the sweat of the musicians and attendees dancing and performing at their 140% and shaking everything they’ve got. Probably that shaking is what makes the mighty Kym Mazelle reach an orgasm at 5:12.
If you want more explanation of this extraterrestrial phenomena just take a look at the rest of the cast of musicians.
