India.Arie - Wonderful
Around 2011, my bandmates and I became involved in a non-profit underground cultural collective in my city. It was underground not just because it was really alternative, but also because it was literally below ground level, there were no windows so it was a pretty dark place and kind of scary. The collective basically hosted live shows and other events from time to time, and also offered rehearsal rooms to the people/bands actively contributing to it. We had one of those rooms for ourselves, even though at that time we were especially inactive as a band, so most of the week I had the room to myself for guitar practice, writing music and rolling some joints. At that time I was in the early stages of my relationship with my wife, then my girlfriend, and we used to hang out there a few days a week and stay for the night. The room wasn’t particularly big but there was enough space for a sofa, a TV, a fridge and a folding bed, among the amps and gear.
Her university was pretty close to my work place, so we would get up early in the morning and I would drive her to campus before going to work. I was really into India.Arie's music at that time, so I had a CD compilation in my car with my favorites from "Acoustic Soul" to "Testimony Vol.1", and "Wonderful" was the track that, with the sun still down, opened our morning trip together. The intro is really evocative, it was a very beautiful way to start the day and soon it became "our song".
“Wonderful” is actually the singer's tribute to the great Stevie Wonder, but still, many parts of the lyrics are really appropriate, and, given Stevie's significance on the scene and India.Arie's universal message of love and mutual respect, it just feels like the perfect soundtrack for the bond with the woman I will always love.
