MARO - If I Leave

Every time this song starts I feel like time stops. Its melancholy encloses so much transcendence, meaningful but unexaggerated. With the lightness of a spirit slowly leaving its body and abandoning itself to its fate.

The lyrics really impress that sensation of a final letter, of a last goodbye. It is a message of eternal loneliness, the piano and her voice being a ghostly desire of a holding hand that extinguished before accomplishing

That loneliness, though, is somehow mitigated, because the message, despite probably being conceived for reaching too late, still manages to soothe the soul. Maro’s voice is a warm-hearted comfort. She doesn’t just sing, it’s more as if she whispers words and melodies into your ear. It lightens your baggage, like a long awaited and intimate embrace from a close friend. Those that, without words, sincerely say "I understand, I hear you. I'm here with you, and I'm not going anywhere".

But after the lyrics end, affliction gradually comes back, with those backing vocals as timeless memories and fading echoes from the other side. And the last bars, like the soundtrack to a movie, picture in my mind a last scene with the recipient of that message, laying down in a room, holding that beloved photograph tightly, while lights slowly dim and breathing finally stops…
