Myron - Free

Ok, this is probably my favourite discovery ever and also one of my favourite soul albums of ALL TIME.

I don't know exactly how I ended up on his music but I remember it was 2017 and that I was doing other things while listening to music and then "Free" started to play and a few bars later I was.. ok wait wait… who is this??   I rapidly scanned his profile and it looked pretty humble. It was a small catalogue and I saw that he had only a few thousands of streams at that time. How is that possible??

Well, I had this album on repeat for several weeks and I still come back to it really often.

He is simply a natural. It’s not just the sensitivity and sincerity of his voice, how familiar and effortless it sounds… It’s also the lyrics, how organically the music flows, the pocket, the perfectly measured instruments,... It’s so chill and it’s so groovy.

But above all, in my opinion, the thing is that this album transpires so much LOVE. For the music, for the people around him. You can just feel it.

It’s really hard for me to chose a few songs from the album over the others, but I made the effort and I think that these are my favourites: “Heaven” opening the album, “Darkside”, “Can’t Deny”, the positive vibes of “Free”, “No Other Love” where he sings to his infant, and “Said I Love Her”, probably a really heart-felt one, considering the intensity of the emotion on his performance.

I think he ended up in some editorial/algorithmic because there’s one song that hit one million streams, but still his second best is at 60k. WTF!?

I also tried to research a little bit but I’ve been unable to find any written review about the album. What I did find is that he developed a solid career in the industry with more than 20 years of experience. His next album featured Meshell Ndegeocello and Robert Glasper (he already had a name then but it was a little before killing it) and he has produced and worked with other recording artists as Ron Isley, Dru Hill and Conya Doss, so he does have a name in the industry, no doubt.  Such a pity his work as a solo artist isn’t more widely appreciated.

So the least I could do is to pay him this humble tribute, to grant him a spot forever on my playlists and shout it from the rooftops!!!
