Kurt Elling & Charlie Hunter feat. Nate Smith - Boogie Down

That was an unexpected gathering of talents!

You might have received this one on your Release Radar if you are already deep into the Vulfpeck universe and its ramifications (especially The Fearless Flyers) but in case you’ve missed it and just for the pleasure of featuring them!

If you are a guitar or bass player you might have heard of Charlie Hunter and his incomparable skills with his 7-stringed. I remember when I discovered his track “Greasy Granny”, I was simply amazed, it’s like… why have a bass player and a guitar player if you can have Charlie Hunter?

If you are into jazz vocals you might be familiar with the warmth of Kurt Elling’s baritone voice. His jazz ballad “Moonlight Serenade” is one of my favourites.

I was aware of them working together but then add Nate Smith’s stamp into the equation and you have one of the grooviest tracks of the year! The bass line is really hot, Kurt really nails the scat and those rich background vocals harmonies and about Nate Smith… what can I say about his insane pocket, words fall short, you better listen to it!

PS: Check out their cover of PJ Morton’s “Sticking to My Guns” and, if you are into Contemporary Jazz, I also recommend Nate's amazing albums “Kinfolk” and “Kinfolk 2” featuring Michael Mayo, Brittany Howard and Gretchen Parlato to name a few. I will go deeper into it soon!
