Raul Midon - State of Mind

This is a very special one for me. Raul Midon’s discovery was a milestone for me as a musician.

I think it was in the mid-late 00’s when a friend told me about him. She sent me the youtube link of his performance at David Letterman’s show, playing “State of Mind” and I was simply amazed. Watch that one, seriously.

Music flows from his body as if he was born for this. Maybe the fact that he’s blind deepened even more his connection and intuition with the art, I don’t know, but his vocal skills, his out of this world slap guitar technique plus his ability to play a perfect trumpet solo with his mouth turns him into a one-man-band. He just excels at everything he does.

I remember that soon after that I made a selection of my favourite songs from his albums “State of Mind” and “A World Within A World” and that was the only CD I had in my car for a few years. At that time I was spending more than an hour a day on my way to work which turned into more than an hour a day singing along to Raul Midon’s songs like crazy

After a while I started to become more confident about my vocals and that encouraged me to do my first performances as a solo artist. It took me a while to master his slap technique and even more to be able to sing over that, but I ended up playing a few Midon’s songs that I still play from time to time.

The first albums of his catalogue are more oriented towards soul/pop and lately he has taken his music closer to jazz, so you can choose the period of his career that fits you most, in any case there’s always a latin touch and a unique signature in his music.

Wait no more, put some Raul Midon in your life!
